Replacing dc with ch 3

There was a question on our KNITFreedom Ravelry group about what it means to "replace the first double crochet with a chain 3." Even though I answered already, I know many people are visual, as I am, and I thought it might be beneficial to post a video. So, please excuse the video quality. This is my FIRST EVER video!!! I'm using my built in camera on my computer to shoot the video, so it's too dark, wobbly because I keep bumping into the computer, and I can't actually see the screen to make sure everything looks okay. I'm almost embarrassed to post this, but oh well! I hope it helps!

  3. This is a great video, but I had trouble hearing it, the volume was too low. Maybe next video you can tape it with a louder volume, so people can always have the option to turn it down some, but can not turn it up if it is recorded on the loudest setting, and is still too low.

  4. Sorry about that, Rae, I've never done a video before! I'll see what I can do to fix that next time.

  5. Great video. But I have a question. It seems to me that after you do the yarn over and go to pull the loop through the chain, you create the loop by taking the yarn front to back instead of back to front. Is there a reason for doing it that way? Other videos I have seen always wrap the yarn from back to front. Thanks

  6. Hi, John! It doesn't matter which way you pull it through, every crocheter has their own preference, and it doesn't change the resulting stitch. That's the way my grandma taught me, and I've been doing it the same since I was a kid!

    1. I will amend my last comment by saying that I never realized that there was a difference in yarn over and yarn under when doing crochet, and John is right....I was doing it wrong in the video. I always did a proper yarn over at the beginning of the stitch, but then I did a yarn under after putting my hook through the stitch on the previous round. That is incorrect, and I wish I would have known earlier when I answered his question. Sorry for the confusion! Just goes to show that we always have something to learn. :-)
